10 cars gathered at BP Horotiu on a sunny Sunday morning – setting off in convey we were to follow written instructions to get us to Nikau Palms café on the West Coast however after encountering a single road (and most people not keen to take their cars into the dust) we retraced our steps and found a more suitable road to the café.

At a short stop on the top of a hill we were unexpectedly greeted by approximately 20 jag’s from the Auckland club heading in the opposite direction – a great site to have so many jag’s in one location at once. After a quick stop at Nikau Palms for a coffee (needing to get out of there before the MG Car club turned up for lunch) we took more suitable flowing country roads before dropping back down onto the expressway at Mercer and then a short drive south to the Hampton Downs race track.

This was our lunch stop and a walk around the race cars on display in the café area – including Owen Evan’s 800hp Porsche 930 land speed record holder. This was a great run, except for those who were passengers in the first part of the trip through very windy roads out the back of Waingaro, and a good change to explore some great Waikato country roads.
